The previous description shared details of two graphics modes, one to focus on graphics quality and the one for frame rate. For several years now, it has been a mystery what Bluepoint Games, the studio behind several remakes including Shadow of the Colossus, is working bendera88 on. However, all speculation was put to rest when Sony unveiled at last June’s PlayStation 5 event that Bluepoint Games is developing a remake of the 2009 classic title, Demon’s Souls. Dynamic range is used properly, to have actually dark areas illuminated dramatically, such as the still-terrifying Tower of Latria. The environments themselves are incredibly detailed, and the various enemies you fight very well realized, but what I kept being impressed by was the lighting.

The main issue with this is that if the player dies, returns to the nexus, or exits to the menu, whatever items that were left on the ground were abandoned and unobtainable for the rest of the playthrough. This can be increasingly aggravating when this forces players to miss out on difficult to find weapons in Demon’s Souls, like the Large Sword of Moonlight or the Dragon Bone Smasher. At the same time that these improvements make walking, running, and fighting feel more fluid and natural, Bluepoint also took it upon themselves to animate the mouth movements of NPCs as they talk to the player. It’s a small detail that shows an appreciation for the original, especially considering that the developers hired all the same voice actors to reprise their roles in the remake. Additionally, to keep the flow of combat intact with the original, the Demon’s Souls remake’s weapons have all kept the same cadence so they all follow the same rhythm as before.
Demon’s Souls remake developers have spoken about their new and highly anticipated unannounced project. This information came from Peter Dalton, Head of technology at Bluepoint Games, who was asked about the project currently in development. Now, I did encounter one interesting change that makes a particular sidequest slightly more complicated. I won’t spoil here but you can read about what has changed, if you want. There’s also a mysterious new door that players haven’t figured out, which could be something or nothing at all.

And what does it tell you about what direction cair78 this might be going in? My least favorite are a few questionable changes to some enemy designs. The boss of the tutorial (The Vanguard) had enough changes to it to the point where it feels like something you might encounter in Doom. The one thing that’s really unfamiliar to us at the moment is the scene from the first trailer where the Dragon God appears to be climbing over and smashing some towers from Boletaria 1-1. But I’m assuming that’s probably not a new in-game event, as the Dragon God did have a cinematic appearance in the game’s original title screen loop. But so far we haven’t seen anything absolutely drastic, as the most recent trailer seems to show the tutorial area having the exact same level layout and enemy placement as the original game.

The real Fool’s Idol will shoot thicker Soul Rays so that’s a way to recognize her. Watch out for magic traps she sets on the floor which will stun you when you step on them. You don’t have to kill all the small enemies to defeat the boss, but once you do the boss becomes a punching bag and can’t protect himself anymore. The big new feature to appreciate is photo mode, which can be used to capture some truly spectacular shots and highlights just how good this game looks. As far as photo modes go it’s one of the better ones I’ve used and I found myself forced to pry away from it simply to progress in the game, quite a good problem to have.

Not only that, but haptic feedback can also assist with dodge timing and reactions. For those who haven’t played Demon’s Souls since 2009, or even those who haven’t played the remake since its 2020 launch, there’s plenty of value in delving back into Boletaria. After playing something like Elden Ring, it’s fascinating to revisit modern FromSoftware’s roots, seeing the impetus for its one-of-a-kind design philosophy with the benefit of hindsight. For anyone interested in gaming history, Demon’s Souls is required reading, and a single playthrough isn’t enough to extract all its mechanical depth.
